Workshop

Chair: Eric Hackman

Presenter: Wes Bergen

Wes will present an intermediate/advanced workshop on Layers in Photoshop. Many of the methods discussed can also be used in Elements or other editing software. This workshop will be of interest to everyone, regardless of level, who is interested in improving their post processing skills. The ability to understand and work with layers is essential for anyone who wishes to use Photoshop effectively.

Working with layers allows you to:

• easily apply tone and colour adjustments to individual elements
• move or resize elements in the image
• create composite images and montages
• change opacity and blending modes for portions of the image
• use layer masking to control which parts of the image will be affected by editing
• use adjustment layers to non-destructively edit your images.

Wes will also demonstrate a method of creating and applying a watermark using layers.

Discussion Night + Groups of Four

Chair: Andrew Pugh

The first part of the evening will be to discuss images submitted by members. This will be your chance to have your images commented on and to receive constructive comments from your fellow Club members. Members submitting images for discussion must be in attendance and should participate in the discussion.

The second part of the evening is to help the Club prepare to enter The Canadian Association for Photographic Art (CAPA) Series of Four Competition. For this competition CAPA defines a photo series as a collection of four images placed in a specific order to tell a progression of events, emotions, concepts or themes. It is expected that the whole is greater than each part. Images can be colour or black and white. Each photo needs to complement each other. Members are encouraged to submit Series of Four images individually or as groups of two, three, or four. However, to be considered for entry into the CAPA competition Series of Four, groups must not contain more than two images by a single photographer.

Nature Night

Chair: Virginia Hayes

Judge: Allen Bargen

I am a lifelong proponent of the belief that to succeed in life, one needs to dedicate a fair portion of it in service to your community and country. We all have personal interests, where we find the greatest opportunities to give back. This is certainly true of photography.

A large part of my professional life is dedicated to the art of photography, and therefore to the agencies, clubs and people who involve themselves with it. On the national and international level, I have devoted countless hours to the support and growth of CAPA, the Canadian Association for Photographic Art. It is my privilege to have worked on the National executive where I served as President of the Association.

It is my pleasure to be deeply involved with ongoing training and education in CAPA, and have written and present several different lectures, courses and educational topics across Canada to support CAPA’s goals. I have been awarded their highest honours, FCAPA and Hon FCAPA for service and photographic achievement. I am a CAPA Certified Judge (CCJ), a Canon CPS photographer and an Honorary Life Member of Lions Gate Camera Club.

My photography is mainly about the natural world and my ongoing travels have taken me to many exotic locations in the world. I am frequently invited to lecture on photographic topics locally and abroad.

While Nature occupies most of my attention, I am also very much involved in Sport Photography and People. You can see samples of these principle areas of my work here, www.allenbargen.com, or follow me on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/AllenBargen.
